Su Wan, a top investment banker, retreats to her grandfather’s old courtyard after a project failure, only to find tenant Lin Shen has turned the idle kitchen into a community canteen. He guards her grandfather’s cast-iron stove, cooking neighborhood-favorite home dishes with firewood, saying he’s “waiting for someone to come back for a hot meal.” Su Wan initially plans to force him out to sell the house, but as she helps him brew ginger tea and dry pickled vegetables, the kitchen smoke gradually softens her sharp edges. Until one day, Lin Shen pulls out a yellowed photo—young Su Wan squatting by the stove gnawing on a sugar pancake, with her grandfather’s note on the back: “When Wanwan returns, let her know the warmest years are always in the smoke of home.” It turns out he wasn’t guarding the stove, but the “warmth of home” her grandfather entrusted to him.
