Lost in the Character Plot:

Lin Xiaoman, a bit-part actress, throws herself into researching Su Nian—a Republican-era woman who waited a lifetime for her love—to land a small role in the drama *Old Dreams*. Unexpectedly, the screenwriter Gu Heng says, “You’re too much like Su Nian”—it turns out the character is based on his grandmother’s real story, and he’s been trapped in the obsession of “replicating the past” for a decade, haunted by his grandmother’s regret of never seeing her lover before she died. The more Xiaoman immerses herself in Su Nian, the blurrier the line between reality and memory becomes for Gu Heng: she waits for him in the rain with an old oil-paper umbrella, leaves notes in fountain pen, and even utters the words his grandmother hid for a lifetime: “I never blamed him.” When Gu Heng finally dares to face that “Su Nian is long gone,” Xiaoman panics—she fears she’s just a stand-in. But Gu Heng realizes then: what he loves is never the shadow from the play, but the girl in front of him—who fights for the role with all her might and is more vivid than anyone else.
