Rural girl A Xiu has sold embroidery and done odd jobs since 16, sparing no effort to fund her brother A Lin’s studies—even rejecting her own marriage and enduring gossip about being “foolish.” All she wishes is for A Lin to “make it out of poverty.” On the exam result day, A Lin rushes back with his red notice, only to find A Xiu crying outside the clinic: the embroidery shop owner stole her wages, and she still can’t afford their mother’s life-saving medicine.
