When Lin Xiaoman kept vigil for her grandfather, she found a pine-resin-stained diary at the bottom of an old trunk in the wooden cabin. In his youth, her grandfather saved Ah Zhu, a bamboo-weaving girl, deep in the woods, and they promised to "grow old together when the bamboo fills the forest". But on the day of the flash flood, her grandfather went down the mountain to buy cough medicine for Ah Zhu. When he returned, he only found Ah Zhu lying in front of the bamboo house, holding an unfinished concentric knot. For the next fifty years, her grandfather planted bamboo every day, saying, "When the bamboo fills the forest, she will come back." Xiaoman found Ah Zhu's tomb and surprisingly saw the wild chrysanthemums her grandfather had placed last week, along with a note: "Ah Zhu, the bamboo has filled the forest. I'm coming to see you." The sound of bamboo weaving came in the wind. Xiaoman turned around and saw her grandfather and Ah Zhu sitting in front of the bamboo house, weaving a concentric knot—their hair was all white with frost.
