An old waiting room in a remote Northeast Chinese town is about to be demolished. On its last day, Aunt Wang, who runs a roasted sweet potato stall, tends her warm stove—three years ago, she had a big fight with her son, who left in a huff and hasn't been heard from since. Xiao Tang, a town girl who just got dumped, squats in a corner wiping tears; she had quit her city job and planned to go south, but lost her wallet. Retired train driver Lao Zhou, holding his late wife's urn, missed the last bus to the seaside and sits silently on a bench. The three strangers with their own troubles cross paths over a plate of hot sweet potatoes: Xiao Tang helps Lao Zhou find money for a ticket, Lao Zhou mentions his late wife's fondness for Aunt Wang's sweet potato scent, and Aunt Wang suddenly gets a call—the voice on the other end is her son's: “Mom, I'm at the door. I followed the sweet potato smell...” Behind the foggy glass wrapped in warm yellow light, the stories in the waiting room become the gentlest redemption for the three strangers.
