Waiting for the Beloved Under the Pomegranate Tree
Waiting for the Beloved Under the Pomegranate Tree Plot:
In a small town in southern China, Azhi and Chenyan, childhood sweethearts, promised to wait for each other under the pomegranate tree when Chenyan left for the frontier army. For years, Azhi sat under the tree daily, counting fallen leaves and longing for Chenyan, her love hidden in pomegranate branches. Five years later, a man in a neat military uniform stood under the familiar pomegranate tree with a strange woman. He avoided Azhi’s gaze, claiming to be her fellow villager asking to stay a few days. Heartbroken, Azhi picked up a long-unopened pomegranate, but spotted the three-year-old love knot she carved peeking from his sleeve—he’d returned under a new identity to hide their unfulfilled engagement, fearing he’d burden her stable life.
