Northeast Chinese New Year: Success Is You Coming Home
Ma Xiao'ai, a planner in Hangzhou, left her Northeast hometown angrily three years ago after a fight with her father over “only big cities mean success”. This year, her best friend tricked her into returning by saying “grandma needs help with her birthday feast” — only to find her dad squatting in the kitchen chewing milk dregs, having secretly tried to make the internet-famous milk tea she posted about. Even more surprising: the village Spring Festival Gala lacked a host, so her dad dug out her childhood “little horse jacket” from her kindergarten hosting days, and even changed the “Success at Once” couplet on the gate to “Xiao'ai coming home is happiness”. When she found the crumpled “I'm sorry” note her dad hid in the old wooden horse, with the smell of sauerkraut and firecrackers filling the yard, she realized: the Northeast New Year isn't about winning — it's about someone turning your stubbornness into a warm bowl of soup.

His eyes red, he yelled: “My brothers are gone—I’m their sky now!” So he stayed: selling homemade pickles in town three kilometers away at dawn, hauling goods and carrying heavy bags at noon, stopping debt collectors from demolishing the house at night. He drank with a village tyrant till vomiting to get back Third Sister-in-Law’s seized farmland, even secretly gave his saved work money as food stamps to the poorest Fifth Sister-in-Law. But when life got better, rumors spread like wind: “The brother-in-law running the household—he must be taking advantage of his sisters-in-law.” Lin Xiaoman clenched his teeth, transferred the house deed to the five women, and held up the red document: “I’m protecting them, not taking from them!” When the warehouse was full of bacon and the rice jar overflowed at year-end, the five sisters-in-law surrounded him with hot dumplings, crying: “Xiaoman, this is our home!”
