She's determined to save these 'talking cultural roots' from the flames of war. But just after acquiring a blood-stained celadon vase, she's pinned against a wall in an alley by Gu Yanzhi, the cold young marshal of a warlord faction: 'Where did you steal the anti-enemy secret letter in this vase?' Lin Xiaoman has to lie about 'communicating with antique spirits' to cover up, while dealing with Gu Yanzhi's relentless pursuit. Worse still, she must carry those 'national memories'—more precious than gold—on her fragile shoulders in a famine-stricken land full of starving people.
