Lin Xiaoman, a mortuary makeup artist, is haunted by a "fire dream" every night—a man in a white shirt calls her "Xiao Zhou" in the flames, urging her to "wake up." Until a male corpse, identical to the man in her dream, is sent to the mortuary. A notebook from his pocket reads: "Xiao Zhou, I've burned a thousand and one nights in your dream, waiting for you to remember me." It turns out Gu Zhao shielded her from a fire five years ago, and she lost her memory due to trauma. Those "dreams" were the "unfinished promise" Gu Zhao stuffed into her soul as he lay dying. When she holds Gu Zhao's warming hand, she suddenly remembers that summer—she sat on the back of his bike and said she wanted to be a mortuary makeup artist, and he laughed: "Then I'll be your 'living dead,' waiting for you to give me the most beautiful makeup."
