In a 1962 Northeast Chinese village, Su Xiaotang is reborn to a “villain family”: her grandma, a miser who counts every grain of rice lent to neighbors; her dad, a troublemaker always clashing with the team leader; her mom, a shrew whose scolding echoes through the village; her brother, a rascal causing chaos daily. The whole family is branded “villains” by the production team, even Xiaotang gets ostracized when cutting pigweed. But she uncovers the truth—Grandma’s rice jar hides rations for orphans, Dad’s “fights” are to retrieve stolen grain for educated youths, Mom’s sharp tongue protects a widowed aunt from rumors, and Brother’s “mischief” is to find lost sheep for left-behind kids. When a struggle session is called to “punish the villains,” Xiaotang stands on the threshing ground with proof: the so-called “bad” ones have the warmest hearts, while those who judge them are just cowards afraid their coldness will be exposed by kindness.
