When Mom, 50, Goes to College, the Kids Panic
When Mom, 50, Goes to College, the Kids Panic Plot:
Fifty-year-old retired housewife Lin Xiufen suddenly announces she’s taking the college entrance exam. Her career-woman daughter finds it “embarrassing,” her rebellious son fears “being laughed at by classmates”—the whole family objects. But Lin stays up late secretly memorizing vocabulary and actually gets admitted to the local normal university! After enrolling, she becomes a “campus darling”—helping a failing junior with advanced math (she was an accountant when young), teaching the dorm aunt square dances, and even confessing for a socially anxious classmate. The kids avoid her at first, until the daughter breaks down from overtime—mom uses “emotion management” learned in her elective to comfort her; when the son is scolded for puppy love, mom takes out her 20-year-old diary and says, “I also secretly liked a boy from the next class back then.” Only then do they realize: Mom isn’t “making trouble”—she’s trying to cross the “generation gap” and “rejoin” their lives. In the end, the family of four sits on a campus bench, with Mom holding her student ID and smiling: “From now on, I’m no longer an ‘outsider’ in your world!”
