Lin Wan falls into the same dream every night: in the herbal shop at the end of the blue-brick alley, she spent three years with Gu Zhao, a physician, from the jingle of jade bells in late spring to the spark of charcoal in snowfall—until one night, the dream abruptly broke as Gu Zhao's figure was swallowed by flames.
