Sanmao's War-Time Journey Plot:

The flames of the War of Resistance devoured the streets. Sanmao, a homeless child clutching half a steamed bun, rummaged through the ruins for scrap copper—only to stumble upon A Qiang, a blood-soaked young soldier with a knife in his chest, clinging to an iron box. A Qiang begged Sanmao to deliver the "letter to the guerrillas" to the west city temple. From then on, Sanmao’s tattered sack held a "hot potato": to evade enemy checks, he hid the box under his begging bowl and poured sour porridge on himself to pretend he had the plague; to find medicine for the feverish A Qiang, he risked sneaking into a Japanese guard post for iodine, chased three streets by dogs. But just 100 meters from the temple, a hail of bullets pierced A Qiang’s back—he fell into Sanmao’s arms, still clutching a half-pencil for Sanmao. Finally, Sanmao tremblingly handed the blood-stained box to the guerrillas. His faint voice drifted in the wind: "Brother A Qiang said this is more important than my bun." The street urchin once trampled underfoot became the most stubborn "letter carrier" in the war.
